Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah’s Strongestman (OKS-Orang Kuat Sabah) Challenge 2011 exploded into action here yesterday with participants going head to head in the first set of three challenges designed to push their muscles to the limit.

A total of 18 aspiring strongmen from all over the State, some even from Singapore, took to the stage to see how their muscles would fair against some of the toughest challenges common in strongman events.

The action, which is set at Star City in Asia City, saw participants taking to the quest in the Truck Pull, Farmer’s Walk and Tire Flip challenges.

Little did they know, these challenges turned out to be tougher than they expected. The first challenge, the Truck Pull, humbled all 18 participants.

In this challenge, participants would attempt to pull 12 tonne truck across a specified distance, where the fastest completing time wins the challenge.

Sadly, not a single participant was able to budge the quarry stone laden lorry. Despite every attempt to draw their strength, not one participant was able to complete the challenge, let alone move the truck even an inch off its mark.

The second challenge, which was the Farmer’s Walk, provided better entertainment for eager spectators who gathered at the event.

In this event, participants will carry two 100kg loads, one in in each hand, and walk across a predetermined distance to see who can complete the task the fastest.

Alfred Magabis was the top competitor when he registered a time of 18.60s.

New-comer Nazri Sitol registered the second best time of 19.02s, while Hanesty Ahandoi, who clocked 19.52s, was third best.

All three competitors are from Kudat.

The day came to an end with the third and final event, which was the Tire Flip.

This challenge requires competitors to flip a 250kg bulldozer tire across two points. The fastest competitor to complete the challenge wins the event.

Singaporean Titan, Sulaiman Ismail brought the crowd to a cheer with his display of strength as he completed the challenge in 30.22s.

His fellow compatriot, Ahmad Taufiq registered the second best time of 30.82s, while Alfred completed the top three placing with his time of 32.74s.

Alfred topped the overall standings with 22 points, with a first and third place finish in the Farmer’s Walk and Tire Flip events respectively.

Ahmad, who came fourth in the Farmer’s Walk (20.36s) and second in the Tire Flip is on 20 points. He is in joint second place with Nazri Sitol, who was second best in the Farmer’s Walk and fourth in the Tire Flip (40.35s).

Currently in third place is Sulaiman on 19 points. He was first in the Tire Flip but finished in sixth place in the Farmer’s Walk (22.23s).

Hanesty takes up fourth place with 17 points. He completed the Farmer’s Walk in third place and was sixth in the Tire Flip (40.35s), followed by Yasir Almakky from Singapore in fifth.

Yasir, who is on 11 points, finished eighth in the Farmer’s Walk (28.17s) and was seventh in the Tire Flip (43.91s).

The action continues today with the final three challenges, namely the Car Deadlift, Yoke Walk and Atlas Stone events.

Mayor, Datuk Abidin Madingkir officiated at the tournament’s launching.

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah’s Strongestman (OKS-Orang Kuat Sabah) Challenge 2011 explodes into action at Star City in Asia City here, tomorrow (Saturday).

The organiser of the event, Casero Events Sdn Bhd, declared that everything down to the smallest detail is in place to ensure a successful staging of the event.

“We are ready to stage the Challenge and look forward to bringing the excitement to everyone this weekend.

“There will be plenty more attractions than last year’s inaugural event and the OKS Challenge this year will also be more exciting and challenging,” said Casero Events Managing Director-cum-organising committee chairman, Steve Mositun.

An added interest in this year’s competition will be the presence of foreign challengers, namely from Singapore. It will be interesting to see how the local competitors size up to the Singapore titans.

Preparation on the technical side of things also is a go.

“Everything is good to goÉall our equipment is in place.

We also have enough marshals to assists in running the show,” said Event Promoter-cum-Technical Head Roger Frederick.

Last year’s event saw 10 participants competing for the title of Sabah’s Strongest Man. This time around there will be more.

“We have received 15 confirmed entries, mostly from Sabah.

There will also be five participants from Singapore, who are expected to arrive today.

“Registration also reopens today (until 9am on Satruday) so we will also be expecting a few more to entries,” said Roger, adding that the challenge is scheduled to kick-off at 10am.

Participants will be put to test in six classic strongman challenges.

Day One will see the participants competing in the Truck Pull, Farmer’s Walk and Tire Flip challenges.

In the first challenge, participants will attempt to pull a 12-ton dump truck across a 20-meter distance. The participant with the fastest completing time will be declared the winner.

Farmer’s Walk is the next event, where participants will to carry a 100kg load in each hand while walking for 40 meters. The fastest completing time wins the challenge.

The third and final challenge of Day 1 will see contestants flipping a 250kg bull dozer tire. The fastest completing time of 10 flips will win the challenge.

The final day will start with the Car Deadlift, which requires participants to lift the front part of a car as many times as possible.

This will be followed by the Yoke Walk. This is a new challenge, replacing endurance grip.

Participants will bear a load of 230kg across their shoulders and walk for a distance of 30 meters.

The Atlas Stone is the final challenge where participants will carry five stones weighing between 90 to 130 kg and place them on a platform.

KOTA KINABALU: The Orang Kuat Sabah (Sabah’s Strongestman) Challenge 2011 to be held at the Star City North in Asia City this weekend promises to be an exciting affair.

Although James Wee, who was initially thought to be defending his title, but (now), is believed to have had a change of heart, the challenge that enters its second edition will not lack thrills and spills, not when it is going to witness the participation of international strength athletes from Singapore.

There will be five athletes from the Republic, including their current champion (Singapore Strongestman Challenge) in Ahmad Taufiq.

Taufiq will be coming with four others namely Mohd Alauddin Mat Arif, Mohd Yasir Alamkky Harun, Mohd Badrun Nafis Saion and Sulaiman Ismail.

The five are among the 15 that have confirmed their participation for the two-day challenge organised by Casero Events.

Event Promoter and Technical Head Roger Frederick said yesterday that they are expecting another one or two more athletes to register at the eleventh hour.

“We believe this figure will increase because there are one or two more athletes who have expressed their desire to compete. But now we just have to wait and see, but if there is none coming forward, we still have a good number of participants,” said Roger.

He also hoped to see defending champion James among the latecomers.

“It would be great if he could compete and defend his title. With the participation of athletes from Singapore, we believe this is going to be more exciting and challenging.

“But even if he opts not to defend his title, we have one or two athletes who we can count on to take on the Singaporeans,” said Roger, without revealing any names.

But looking at the 10 confirmed local participants it looks like Roger is referring to Alfred Magabis from Kudat, who finished second at the JBorneo Tuhun Tavakas (JBorneo Strongestman Challenge 2010).

For the record, the winner of the JBorneo Strongestman Challenge 2010 Geinod Lozitin also opted out of the OKS 2011.

Micro Pilitino Basar from Tuaran, who finished third last time out (OKS), is another name that could spring a surprise, and so is Hanesty Ahandoi from Kudat. He finished fourth when he made his debut at the JBorneo Strongestman Challenge last year.

The rest of the confirmed athletes are Billy Simon George (Norman Gym Penampang), Alvid Landy Iloyd (KK – fifth placed OKS 2010), Nazri Sitol (newcomer), Areon Majamun (Kepayan – Tuhun Tavakas contestant 2010), Affendy Mathius (Keningau – 4th placed OKS 2010) and George Jailis (Tambunan – newcomer).

The identity of the 15th contestant was unavailable at press time.

These strength athletes will be put to a real test where they will push it to the limit in overcoming the six classic strongestman challenges namely truck pull, farmer’s walk, car dead lift, tyre flip, atlas stone and newly introduced challenge yoke walk.

For the record, the winner of the challenge would receive RM1,500 prize money, while the second to sixth placing participants would pocket RM1,000, RM700, RM400, RM200 and RM100 respectively plus trophies and medals.
